Twenty-five years, thousands of reps, and one problem that never got solved. The hardest part of sales isn’t the deal. It’s remembering everything the job requires you to hold.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with thousands of sales reps over the past 25 years at Salesforce, Zuora, Elastic, and Snyk. Every deal won and lost was a learning experience. Every Monday morning forecast call was an exercise of resilience and strength. End of quarter was a test of will power and a commitment to excellence. I am grateful to all the reps I had a chance to work with and humbled by the toughness of the job you do.
Let me net out what I believe is the hardest thing about sales: memory.
What every rep has to remember
It’s the middle of Q2. There are 10 deals in various stages. 5 deals are in discovery and qualification, 2 deals are in POC, 2 deals are in legal, and 1 deal has closed.
Let’s think about what a rep has to remember.
- What data was gathered during discovery
- Who the champion is at each account, who the naysayers are, and influencers
- What are the key technical and business drivers
- What was learned during the POC and what was the value delivered
- What roadblocks or objections were uncovered
- What did the security or compliance team ask for
- Who are the competitors involved in each deal
- Who is the incumbent and why are they seeking an alternative
- What are the decks, artifacts, proposals and quotes that need to be created
- What campaigns and programs did the prospect participate in
- What legal and contract terms are being negotiated
- What is the prospect or customer’s budget
- What are the pricing considerations and discounts
- Who are the right customer references to provide
- What action items and commitments were made, and by whom
- What is the post-sale success criteria and plan
Think about this for a moment. A rep has to get this information for all 10 accounts in the quarter. And then the rep has to communicate progress, status and updates to sales management, as well as, work with each prospect champion to drive communication. So how does the rep do this? They coordinate and quarterback a lot of meetings.
The meetings pile up
Based on 10 deals in a quarter at various stages, there are 50+ external and internal meetings that a rep is responsible for holding memory on. Here is an illustrative example:
| Discovery | POC | Legal | Closed | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| # Deals | 5 | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| # External Mtgs | 10 | 6 | 6 | 2 |
| External Team | Influencer or Champion | Technical and business team | Legal team | All |
| # Internal Mtgs | 10 | 12 | 12 | 2 |
| Internal Team | SDR, AE, SE | AE, SE, Product, Services | AE, Legal, VP or Sales Manager | AE, SE, CSM, Services |
And let’s not forget about the pipeline that the rep also has to build for the next quarter. This is why I’ve always had a lot of empathy for sales reps. It is one of the hardest jobs on the planet, and the entire company is dependent on them to drive deals across the finish line.
Why the tools fall short
So let’s get back to memory.
If a rep is doing 50+ meetings in a quarter, how are they supposed to remember every commitment, action item, and deliverable required to get deals over the finish line?
Gartner found in May 2026 that AI already saves sellers nearly five hours a week, and that 72% of sales organizations fail to reinvest that time in high-value work. Most tools give the time back. Almost none of them tell the rep what to do with it. Memory only matters if it drives the next action, the way our own does.
For example:
- Salesforce and Hubspot CRM are not memory systems. They hold activity records, notes, and opportunity details but not actionable memory to automate work.
- Zoom, Google Meet, and Gong are not memory systems. They do call and video recording but can’t use memory to deliver real-time actions and follow-up.
- AI notetakers like Fathom, Granola, and Fireflies are not memory systems. They are great at notetaking but aren’t capable of delivering actions that move deals forward.
Why we built AnyTeam
We didn’t just build another bolt-on AI tool. We created a system that has memory that compounds across the rep, team, and organizational, and importantly, memory that can aid in the delivery of actions by the rep or via AnyTeam’s agents, move deals forward, and be the anchor for organizations to thrive in the New Selling Economy.
